His likely replacement cannot replicate the same authority in the air or on the ball, forcing the rest of the back five into uncomfortable positions earlier than planned.
Germany have their own minor issues, notably at left-back and the recent loss of Schlotterbeck. Yet these are depth problems, not structural ones. Nagelsmann still fields a front line and double pivot capable of sustained pressure once the initial resistance cracks.
Why the margin matters more than the win
The outright Germany win sits too short because it prices the class gap without accounting for how Paraguay’s absences accelerate the moment the game opens up. The handicap line captures that acceleration more cleanly. Once Paraguay can no longer win second balls or close central lanes with the same intensity, the gaps appear faster and wider.
Alfaro’s side will still attempt to sit compact and absorb. The question is whether they retain the personnel to do so for ninety minutes against Germany’s movement between the lines. The evidence from their recent matches suggests the answer is no.
